Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles County
Manhattan Beach incorporated in 1912; its name, borrowed from New York by an early developer, is said to have been settled by a coin toss. The concrete pier, finished in 1920, ends in a round building that houses a small aquarium. Beside it the sand is lined with volleyball courts, home each summer to the Manhattan Beach Open, a tournament dating to 1960.
